SALVADOR DALI
1904 – 1989
SALVADOR
DALI was born on 11 May 1904 in Figueras (Spain).
Having a passion for drawing and painting (cubism and futurism),
he entered the Madrid School of Fine Arts in 1921.He made friends
with Frederico Garcia Lorca and Luis Bunuel.
In 1926, during his first travel to Paris , he met Picasso and
joined a group of surrealist painters and writers.
In 1929 , a young Russian called Gala became his model and girlfriend.
His "soft watches" were exhibited at the first surrealist
exhibition in the US in 1932.
At the beginning of the war, he settled down in the USA for a
few years with Gala ; there , he worked for the cinema (he wrote
a scenario for the Marx Brothers) , theatre , opera and ballet.
SALVADOR DALI became one of the most famous painter of that period.
His various means of expression (exhibitions , conferences , inventions…)
fascinated and disturbed altogether.
In the 50s and 60s , his main themes were religion , history and
science.
In the 70s , he inaugurated a theatre-museum DALI in Figueras
where a great many of his early paintings as well as paintings
from his surrealist period and from the last part of his life
were presented.
In 1979 , an important retrospective SALVADOR DALI was organized
first at the Paris"Centre Georges Pompidou " and then
at the Tate Gallery in London.
In 1982 , Gala's death moved him a lot.
His last painting in 1983 was called "Aronde's tail".
